My guess is that the only new template that will ship out of the box will be a new Discussion db.

True. I would ask a Design Partner as I think they would be testing these out as part of 8.5. Better yet are there any new templates in the 8.5 beta?
The web side is an excellent news but it could be good to revamp all the NTF , for the client side, to the 21th century...a few of them are from the R5 era.
